Abstract:
This work addresses, within the framework of an industrial R&D project, the analysis of different propulsion systems for unmanned surface vehicles (USV) based on renewable hydrogen. The aim is to determine which system stores the greatest amount of energy on board per unit of weight and therefore provides the longest endurance. A simulation software developed in Matlab is used, reproducing the behaviour of the photovoltaic array, the consumption loads, the control electronics, the lithium battery, the electrolyser, the hydrogen tank, the fuel cell and the water tank, allowing the input parameters and the radiation and consumption scenarios to be varied. Two vessels are studied. For the 1.6 m USV, the viability of on-board hydrogen production is analysed, concluding that it is only viable with very high photovoltaic power/consumption ratios; due to space and weight constraints, a battery electric system with a patented autonomous charging station is chosen. For the 5 m USV, a battery system, a hybrid fuel-cell system without on-board generation and one with on-board generation are compared across different latitudes and seasons, complementing the technical analysis with a cost study. The results show that the hybrid system without on-board hydrogen generation offers the best combination of endurance, weight and cost.
