Objective. Given that there is a substantial interest in mental health, both in academic circles and in popular culture, this study aims to analyse the media coverage of mental health issues in Spain. Methods. An analysis is carried out of the most consulted media on the Internet according to the General Media Study (EGM), discarding social media due to the complexity that its study entails: El País, La Vanguardia and the RTVE news portal. The Diario Información de Alicante is also analysed to study how mental health is addressed in the media in our immediate environment. Results. The results show extensive coverage of mental health-related topics in the selected media, with a particular emphasis on depression (6.38%), suicide (6.38%) and anxiety disorders (4.79%). It is observed that a significant proportion of the articles analysed (22.95%) focus on emotional well-being, mostly offering advice to achieve said well-being (60.87%). The type of journalistic piece that most addresses mental health issues is the informative piece (34.10%), followed by bait-news (20.10%) and reports (14.76%). A greater frequency of publication of news about mental health is evident in events such as international days related to mental health (16%), as well as a change in the focus of media coverage in situations such as the beginning of the school year or relevant sporting events. Conclusion. Responsible and compassionate media coverage of mental health issues is needed, as well as comprehensive approach that considers the social determinants of mental health and that seeks solutions beyond medicalization.
