Introduction: Sarcopenia is a prevalent condition in older adults, characterized by the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength. This condition negatively impacts the quality of life and functional independence of the elderly, increasing the risk of falls, morbidity and mortality. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of resistance exercise as a strategy to prevent and control sarcopenia in older adults through a bibliographic review of scientific literature. Material and Methods: An exhaustive search was conducted in 6 databases: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web Of Science, Scopus, and PEDro. From an initial 794 articles, 19 were selected after applying exclusion and inclusion criteria to evaluate the relationship between resistance exercise and sarcopenia in individuals aged 65 and older. Results: The review of 19 selected studies shows that resistance exercise significantly improves muscle mass and strength, as well as physical functionality in older adults. The results vary depending on the type of exercise, dosage, and adherence to the training program. The need to tailor exercise programs to individual patient conditions and contexts is highlighted. Conclusion: Resistance exercise is an effective intervention to prevent and treat sarcopenia in older adults. It is crucial for physiotherapists to be trained in designing and implementing personalized exercise programs to maximize benefits among the elderly population.
