The plantar fascia is a fibrous band that supports the medial arch and acts during
gait as a structure for stability and movement, the latter achieved through the
windlass mechanism. One of the pathologies that can occur is plantar fasciitis, due
to an overload of the fascia, affecting individuals regardless of their physical activity
levels. Among the various treatments frequently mentioned in the literature is the
strengthening of the intrinsic muscles of the foot, which shape the medial plantar
arch. Strengthening these intrinsic muscles is effective for such conditions, but measuring their strength reliably and validly is important to determine the
effectiveness of the treatment, whether before or after its implementation.
Objective:
Identify and describe the different methods for evaluating the strength exerted by the
intrinsic muscles of the foot.
Materials and Methods:
The search was conducted in the PubMed/Medline database using keywords such
as intrinsic foot muscle strength, intrinsic foot strength, measure, measuring, and
method.
1)The device can measure muscle strength, 2) Applicable only in humans, 3) Articles
written in English or Spanish, 4) Naming foot muscles, 5) The temporal range spans
from 2000 to 2023. The articles found were classified into three major groups.
Results:
17 articles were obtained. In each of the two major categories, either instrumental
measurements or clinical measurements, there is at least one method demonstrating
the possibility of measuring intrinsic foot muscle strength. Although the dynamometer
is considered the gold standard for measuring intrinsic foot muscle strength due to its
intra-evaluator and inter-evaluator reliability, it is also a valid and effective instrument.
Conclusion: The methods with the most evidence of validity and effectiveness are
the dynamometer, navicular drop and the paper grip test.
