Occupational therapy (OT) in combination with aquatic therapy (AT) can be an
effective strategy to address the specific needs of people with ASD, providing them with
opportunities to improve their skills and general well-being in a safe and therapeutic
environment.
According to the literature we see, we can say aquatic therapy can offer several
benefits such as anxiety reduction, improvement of motor skills, promotion of social
interaction, controlled sensory stimulation and development of functional skills, motor
planning, problem solving and organisation among others.
For these reasons, the following work focuses on the realization from the perspective
of Occupational Therapy (OT) of an informative guide on aquatic therapy in users diagnosed
with Autism Spectrum Disorder, in which we offer information on basic aspects of aquatic
therapy for families, professionals or the general public.
The guide is divided into 8 sections covering the following topics: characteristics of
ASD, types of pools, physical properties of water, sensory processing, considerations to take
into account and first sessions.
