Introduction: Pelvic floor dysfunction is a variety of disorders of the pelvic floor muscles.
Dysfunctions can be urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, among others.
Main risk factors are pregnancy and childbirth, although there are also other risk factors to take into
account. The main objective of this review is to investigate different training methods in order to
prevent pelvic floor dysfunctions during pregnancy.
Material and methods: Enquiry of the articles used in this bibliographic review were ‘Scopus’, ‘Wed
of Science’ and ‘Pubmed’. Publications from 2012 to 2023 were included, *PEDro’s* scale
(Physiotherapy Evidence Database Scale) was employed to observe the methodological quality of the
articles used.
Results: A total of 405 articles were acquired in the first search. There also were excluded articles
filtering them by year, type of article, pregnant women and age; that were about the matter of
prevention of pelvic floor dysfunctions during pregnancy. Lastly, after reviewing several articles and
abstractsin depth, eight articles of interest were included.
Conclusions: It has not been possible to resolve Pilates method by being effective considering that
requirements and heterogeneity of the studies have not presented the best conditions. Although, it has
been able to be determined that it can improve the resistance and strength of the pelvic floor. Training
of the muscles of the pelvic floor and abdomen seems to be the strategy to follow as a method of
prevention for pelvic floor dysfunctions. In the same way that exercise in general improves the quality
of life.
