Nowadays, inclusion is the order of the day. However, there is a misconception about
inclusion, as many children with disabilities are left out of the regular classroom. For this
reason, the story of Elena Segura, mother of an adolescent with Pervasive Developmental
Disorder, who fights day after day for her daughter's rights, is told as the main thread. Elena
narrates in detail the problems she has had with the educational system since her daughter
was born. Also, the testimony of Indira Martinez, a young woman with Down Syndrome,
explains the obstacles and challenges she has faced in accessing education and what
changes she believes should be implemented so that she could have a higher quality
education.
To justify these stories, the legal framework and policies that support educational inclusion
and the rights of people with disabilities in Spain and, more specifically, in the Valencian
Community, where Elena lives, have been highlighted. All this is supported by the discourse
of professionals in inclusive education, as well as teachers from special schools. They explain
the meaning of inclusion, the barriers that exist for these people, how to achieve an
inclusive school and the benefits that this entails. In addition, the main problem in Spain is
presented: the human rights of people with disabilities are being violated, according to the
UN.
Also, the measures that are being carried out by the Ministry of Education to improve the
circumstances are explained. And, inclusive methodologies that are being implemented that
help to increase the participation of people with disabilities in class are proposed.
Finally, the topic is discussed from the point of view of communication: The mistakes that
are made when talking about people with disabilities in the media, how it could be
improved in this regard and the importance of the profession to help generate changes in
society.
