The aim of this paper is to gain a deeper understanding of the negative consequences of the non-existence of dual Spanish and Lithuanian nationality and to put forward the reasons in favour of its adoption.
A study is made of the different methods existing in both Spanish and Lithuanian legislation for acquiring their nationality, and their restrictive and rigorous attitude when it comes to allowing the plurinationality of their citizens. Furthermore, it presents the current panorama of the European Union, whose member states are increasingly interrelated and with a common European citizenship, and how this rejection of dual nationality by the Spanish and Lithuanian states prevents the full enjoyment of the rights inherent to European citizens. They do not adapt to the current reality, where the borders between member states are almost non-existent and where European citizens are encouraged to make use of their new personal European status and move to the member state of their choice. This situation is very detrimental to the inhabitants of these countries, who have to make the difficult choice between maintaining their link with their state of origin or having a full life in the country where they have decided to settle, because at the moment it is not possible to have both. Although in the light of the recent agreements signed by Spain, the initiative in Lithuania to implement a referendum on its plurinationality and the growing importance of EU law, we may soon see a change for the better.
