July 22, 1921 would mark Spain with one of the greatest military disasters in its history.
The soldiers, who in disarray fled from Annual to Melilla, described to the journalists
that there they found hell and the chaos they suffered to reach this corner of Africa.
Rumors about the fatal outcome of General Manuel Fernández Silvestre's campaign in
Moroccan territory soon reached the Peninsula where the press, eager to inquire
about what happened, developed an operation worthy of study.
For this reason, one hundred years after the Annual Disaster, this case study is
presented to show how this event was treated by the press and how the figure of the
war correspondent developed. In the same way, it is intended to investigate the modus
operandi of the war reporter of the early twentieth century.
Through a trip through the pages of the Spanish newspapers of 1921 and 1922, an
attempt has been made to reconstruct chronologically how the reader was being
informed day by day of what was happening in Melilla. The research aims to highlight
how the patriotism of some and the discontent of others about the action of Spain in
Morocco were reflected in the main newspapers.
The propaganda work of some newspapers that encouraged social and political unrest,
and the development of the Picasso File, which emerged from the need to find culprits
for the Annual tragedy, were the main causes of the collapse of the current
Government and the establishment of a Dictatorship.
