In Spain we have the pleasure of having a wide variety of sports that we can practice, from
soccer, the king of sports in the world, to the smallest and most unknown such as rhythmic
gymnastics, weightlifting or table tennis. All these sports coexist together, but the reality is
a little different, and it is that only a few have the privilege of having an overwhelming
visibility, these being finally the most requested by society.
This work investigates precisely that, how a racket sport such as badminton, which is
increasingly popular and practiced, does not have the visibility it deserves through the
national media, being one of the most forgotten. For this reason, the media coverage of the
written press (diario Marca), television (Teledeporte) and radio (Cadena SER) in recent
years is analysed, more specifically from the last Rio Olympics in 2016 to the present.
We must thank champions like Carolina Marín for giving visibility to one of the minority
sports that has the least support. But despite having Olympic medallists, how many times
have we seen this sport shown in the media? Few, very few, with the exception of the
Olympic Games, classifications for this or World or European finals.
But what is the real reason for this? Is it social pressure? Doesn't it generate enough income
for the media? Do more people move sports like soccer than minority players? These are
questions that I ask myself and that I hope to resolve in this work that I have carried out
through an analysis of the different newspaper libraries of the selected media and by
conducting a survey of society. In addition, the study is completed with an interview with
Helena Sánchez, a badminton player for CB Alicante and 3rd in the Spanish Absolute
Badminton Championship in women's doubles.
