Abstract:
The Construction Product Regulations (CPR 305, 2011) established, among other things,
the need to develop environmentally-friendly construction products and to assess their
environmental impact. To do so, the implementation of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
methodology is recommendable since it is the tool that is widely recognized
internationally for evaluating the environmental performance of products and systems.
Using this method and adding an economic analysis, the key variables of
environmental and economic impacts were identified for the 5 alternative solutions that
can be used for interior partition walls commonly used in Spain, concluding that the
gypsum plasterboard are the most eco-efficient. Improving this system is feasible by
replacing the gypsum panels for renewable alternatives. By reusing residues of vine
prunings (Vitis vinífera L.) and canary date palm (Phoenix canariensis), experimental
panels were manufactured which fulfill the minimum standards for being implemented
in buildings. Vitis vinífera L. panels had a good thermal insulation capacity and good
behavior against fire whereas P. canariensis boards can be manufactured without
adhesives with a low energy consumption process. The implementation of these new
materials is a key factor in the improvement of the energetic, environmental and
economic performance of the buildings and, this way, protect the environment
