Judas was a sissy boy is a fanzine that arises from the need to explore and claim from a
queer perspective the intersections between contemporary pop culture and religious
iconography. Using the 2000 musical Jesus Christ Superstar directed by Gale Edwards and
Nick Morris, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, it aims to redefine religious symbols by
means of the cuirization of imaginaries, uniting queer and leather.
The choice of the fanzine as a format responds to its capacity to operate from the margins
and document the diversity of sexual practices and their complex representations, an
approach consistent with its historical function in alternative movements (Galaxina, 2017).
The analysis of JSC 2000 will allow us to explore whether the aesthetic and symbolic codes
of leather culture are integrated into the film, thus investigating the representation of
marginalized practices and aesthetics.
This study is framed in the socio-cultural context of the post-World War II, when the United
States experienced a cultural effervescence driven by movements such as the
Counterculture. Both Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) and leather culture emerged from this
social evolution, and JSC 2000 will be analyzed as an adaptation that amalgamates
elements of leather and queer iconography. The project also incorporates a socio-cultural
analysis of the 1940s to 1970s to understand these phenomena as products of a
socio-political development, enriching the existing academic dialogue.
This entire proposal is understood as a memory that covers both the pre-production
(i.e., research) and the post-production of the making and planning of the fanzine.
