Background: Many mental health patients receive pro re nata medication during their admissions to control states like agitation, anxiety, insomnia, and aggressive behaviors. Objective: To examine the use of pro re nata medication in adult mental health patients and its relationship with other nonpharmacological interventions, and whether the use of these interventions favors a reduction in the administration of this type of medication. Method: Searches were carried out in the Scopus, PsycInfo, PubMed and Web of Science databases. The bibliographic manager Mendeley was used to screen articles. In addition, the guidelines of the Prisma 2020 Declaration were followed. Results: A total of 312 articles were obtained, of which 6 finally met the eligibility criteria. The main findings show that the use of pro re nata continues to be one of the first lines of action for the rapid management of certain behaviors such as agitation and that nonpharmacological interventions are not being tried enough. Despite this, half of the articles show that certain interventions are effective in reducing the use of pro re nata medication. Conclusion: Given the small number of publications comparing the use of pro re nata medication and nonpharmacological interventions in adult mental health patients, in addition to examining whether the use of the latter is effective in reducing medication administration, it is concluded that further research is needed with more specific studies on this problem.
