Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by a series of alterations in sensory perception and information processing, which significantly affect social interaction and adaptation to the environment. This paper presents a systematic review of the scientific literature published in the last five years, with the aim of analyzing the perception process in adolescents with ASD. Eleven relevant studies that explored visual perception, information processing and related cognitive functions in this population were identified and analyzed. The results suggest that alterations in brain connectivity, especially in the prefrontal cortex and insula, play a crucial role in the observed perceptual difficulties. In addition, a tendency towards local over global processing is highlighted, which may explain some of the difficulties in sensory integration and contextual interpretation. This work underscores the importance of continuing to investigate perceptual processing in ASD to improve both diagnostic strategies and interventions.
