Local journalism has been present in Elche for 180 years. It is a close, personal and essential journalism to know the current affairs that surround the citizens, highlighting the role of women in this profession that has also been and is crucial. The city of Elche has more than 60 journalists, but in this case we wanted to highlight the experiences of Genoveva Martin, Mariate Bolivar, Maite Vilaseca and Cristina Medina, four key communication professionals in the town, who have shown the challenges they have had to face for being women, highlighting the gender discrimination by the sources. All this has been changing over the years, but there is still a long way to go. In addition, they also wanted to mention some barriers that these journalists have been breaking, such as, for example, access to management positions. In this case, Mariate and Genoveva have been the first women to preside the Association of Informers of Elche.
These four journalists have highlighted how journalism was before, with the now, showing that currently there is a greater workload for journalists and has lost the essence of local journalism: the personal and close point that journalists gave the news, all because of lack of time.
In spite of this, the commitment of the professionals to try to maintain the quality that characterizes local journalism is highlighted.
