Caring for someone with an eating disorder (ED) brings about many negative consequences
both physically and emotionally in the people who care of them. These include physical
exhaustion, stress, social isolation, and immense burden. However, these consequences are
further exacerbated when these patients not only suffer from an ED but also exhibit traits of
autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Currently, there are programs to support and assist family
members of individuals with EDs and programs to aid family members of individuals with
ASD, but there is no program that encompasses the needs and demands of the relatives of
the patients who present this comorbidity. Therefore, the objective of this study has been to
develop an intervention proposal that addresses the primary needs of these family members.
To achieve this, a 6-session program has been developed, covering the following topics:
psychoeducation, self-care, communication skills, and emotional management skills, aiming
to better equip them for daily challenges, mitigate the consequences that these disorders
entail and assist in the recovery process of their child.
The evaluation of this intervention program will be conducted using the following
instruments: Depression, anxiety and stress scale, Accommodation and enabling scale for
eating disorders among carers, Family questionnaire and the Eating disorders symptom
impact scale.
