Introduction: Infantile cerebral palsy (CP) is defined as "a group of permanent disorders of the development of movement and posture, that cause a limitation". They present alterations that can improve with the use of ankle and foot orthoses, achieving better functionality in their day to day life, being more autonomous and independent.
Objective: To determine the efficacy of ankle-foot orthoses on functionality in people with infantile cerebral palsy using occupational therapy.
Methodology: A single case study of a user diagnosed with cerebral palsy was carried out. This study assessed functionality by direct observation, spasticity with the Modified Ashworth Scale, balance with the Berg Balance Scale and the level of independence with the Barthel Index. Pre and post-intervention assessment was conducted. Clinical and socio-demographic data were collected.
Results: There was an improvement at functional level assessed by direct observation. Similarly, an improvement was observed in spasticity with the modified Ashworth scale, in terms of balance with the Berg scale, and in independence in ABVD with the Barthel Index.
Conclusion: The intervention using an ankle-foot orthosis using Occupational Therapy has been effective in a user with cerebral palsy with impairments at a functional, spastic, balance and independence level, supporting the need to include these orthoses as part of the treatment. It would be advisable to develop other studies in which a larger number of cases are included in order to confirm these results.
