Introduction and objectives: Oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM) is an assisted reproduction technique that aims to obtain mature oocytes after culturing immature oocytes recovered from antral follicles. However, spontaneous IVM of immature oocytes recovered from stimulated cycles, although limited, is also referenced in the literature and is known as ―rescue‖ IVM. The main objective of this study was to determine which physical and/or clinical variables of patients subjected to stimulated cycles can favor IVM rates as well as those of subsequent embryonic development.Materials and Methods: A retrospective cohort study was carried out that included 448 prophase I oocytes (PI) from a total of 248 patients undergoing conventional ovarian stimulation protocols. The physical and clinical variables studied for the patients were: age, body mass index, diagnosis, number of PI oocytes obtained/cycle, number of days of duration of ovarian stimulation and characteristics of medication used (GnRH agonists/antagonists, daily dose/total gonadotrophins and FSH type). The rates evaluated were the IVM rate, the oocyte activation rate, the embryonic division rate and the blastocyst formation rate. Results: The results showed in the multivariate analyzes that the variable that only consistently showed significance was the use of a gonadotropin combination when comparing a low rate of IVM versus a medium rate of IVM (OR 0.072; 95% CI 0.006- 0.848; p=0.037).
Conclusions: Age, endometriosis and the dose of FSH administered during ovarian stimulation are not influencing factors in the success of IVM to ―rescue‖ oocytes from stimulated cycles. However, the combination of gonadotrophins during stimulation reports lower rates of IVM.
