L’Escorxador was inaugurated in November 2008 in Elche. Its facilities were remodeled
on the old Municipal Slaughterhouse in a project never seen before, under a concept
that was difficult to define and which underwent various variations until it became a
center determined to become an avant-garde benchmark for culture, and which from
the beginning was criticized by the opposition to the Consistory government both for its
cost and for elitism of an offer with a contemporary vision focused on contrasted
professional artists, both nationally and internationally, and moving away from the
process of experimentation and research by local groups. To do this, its facilities were
endowed with the highest quality material and equipment in order to carry out all kinds
of artistic activities, from music, theater or dance to fine arts and the exhibition
exhibition of different styles and artists. All this had an important media impact not only
at the local level, but also in media with a broader scope and, of course, in specialized
media.
With the passage of time, L’Escorxador has undergone multiple changes in all its aspects.
At the political level, the critical opposition of its beginnings later became the
government of the city and, therefore, also of the destiny of the center, and had the first
impact of removing the label of contemporaneity to grant it the most generic and open
cultural center. , especially to local groups and artists unnoticed in its first stage, to
return years later, and to date, with a new political change of the same sign as that of
the beginning, but in which although it has been renamed the center of contemporary
culture, have more similarities with the immediately previous stage than with that of its
first years of existence.
