During the pre-harvest development of cherries, the rainfall at key moments for the development of this crop exposes the production of this fruit to the cracking of them. This cracking of the fruits is one of the main problems of this crop, whose study is complex due to dependence on numerous factors of genetic, physiological, climatic and agronomic order. In addition, cherries have a very short shelf life after harvest, which compromises the commercialization of the fruit. The contribution of this work focuses on the use of natural and environmentally sustainable treatments applied in varieties “Prime Giant”, “Early Lowry” and “4-84”, with the aim of increasing the quality and providing solutions to the problem of cherry cracking at the time of harvest. The application of elicitors such as methyl jasmonate (MeJa) 0.5 mM and oxalic acid (OA) 2 mM as preharvest treatments applied at key developmental moments, mitigated the quality limitations of these fruits. After analyzing the results, we checked how treatments in general were successful in increasing the size of the fruits and improving post-harvest quality. Respiration and weight loss during postharvest storage were reduced at the same time that parameters such as fruit firmness were delayed. Furthermore, both compounds reduced the cracking rate of the fruits. Thus, the treatments were effective raising quality standards at the time of harvest and in its subsequent preservation, so elicitors like OA and MeJa at applied doses can be considered as an effective and sustainable tool to improve quality attributes in cherries.
