Catalonia has been at the epicenter of current issues due to the tensions that are occurring,
as a result of the political and economic instability that is suffering. The disagreements
with the central government and the support of the citizens who favor independence
have created a socio-political context in which Catalonia could be separated
from Spain by paying a very high price, in addition to the lack of constitutionality of the
process, because this procedure would have no place in the Spanish legal framework.
The aim of this research is to refute a series of reasonings that, always based on the
premise that in the current legal framework in which we are this hypothesis is completely
illegal, Catalan politicians have given to the people with the aim of persuading Catalonia
that separation is the best way to improve the economic, political and social
conditions of the new “country”. This improvement would include declaring independence,
but without taking into account that this would decrease the economic level of
Catalonia, reduce trade (the main driving force for chance of wealth), in addition to go
against the legal and constitutional framework in which Spain is at the moment.
As a conclusion, Catalonia faces a very uncertain future due to the instability of its actions
in the economic and political sphere. Independence would cause the imminent departure
of the European Union, due to the separation from Spain, the departure of companies
from the Catalan territory; the decrease of the tourist flow, the economic profitability,
the investments, and the exit of different business entities, causing a decrease in
the capacity of economic maneuver what, in fact, if we add the expenses of the creation
of a new State, it would lead us to a future economic recession of the supposed new Catalan
State.
