Suicidal behavior is a public health problem. It is the second cause of death in the world
from 15 to 29 years old. The study of risk and protection factors for suicidal behavior is a
priority. Self-esteem has been considered a psychological variable that can perform both as
protection and risk factor, being especially relevant during adolescence and young adult age.
Thus, it is necessary to know the role of this variable related to suicidal behavior and suicide
attempt for teenagers and young adults. Accordingly, the main objective of this study is to
determinate the relation between self-esteem and suicide or suicide attempts in teenagers and
young adults (12-26 years old) through a systematic review of literature and a meta-analysis.
The different databases used for the search were; Cochrane, Medline, PsycINFO, EMBASE, Web of Science and OpenGrey. About 20,000 records were revised. The metaanalysis
was performed through the effect size and odds ratio calculations, with a 95% CI and
p-value. Heterogeneity was tested using Chi-square test and Higgins !" estimator. Sensitivity
analyses were also used.
Twenty-two articles met criteria for inclusion. On the one hand, in qualitative analysis,
thirteen studies showed stadistically significant differences. On the other hand, the final metaanalisys
showed that self-esteem is a variable associated with suicide, with an effect size .58
in studies of continuous variables and OR .50 (.35-.72) with p<.001 in categorical. The overall
results showed that present high level of self-esteem is a protective factor against suicide attempts in adolescents. It is important to consider self-esteem among adolescents and young
adults to prevent future suicidal behavior.
