Introduction: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the Central Nervous System that causes disability in young adults. This disease causes mood disorders, with depression being a frequent diagnosis in MS patients; resilience is considered a health protective factor by many authors. Objectives: Our purpose is to determine the factors that buffer the impact of the disease and to group individuals according to these factors, as well as to test an explanatory model of resilience.Method: Through cross sectional design, 101 patients with MS of the General University Hospital of Alicante were evaluated. Cluster analysis was used to group the subjects according to their levels of resilience, optimism, coping strategies, self-efficacy, social support, social skills and disease severity. Likewise, models of resilience were tested by means of the modeling of structural equations. Results: We found four different profiles: the searcher for social support, the independent, the socially skilled and the non-resilient. We did not find differences between the profiles according to the disease severity. In the same vein, path analysis showed that psychosocial variables had greater effect as predictors of resilience than disease severity. The adapted model accounted for 47% of resilience. Conclusions: The study of resilience in the medical context has promising clinical applications. The existence of variables that can be acquired, such as coping strategies and social skills, would allow the inclusion of training workshops for prevention, intervention and rehabilitation in health programs.
