Antimicrobial resistance to traditional antibiotics is a first-order problem that can lead to a situation in which there are no longer effective therapies against common infective diseases. As for Streptococcus pneumoniae, the number of antibiotic-resistant strains is on the increase. This fact, added to the high mortality of the pneumococcal infections nowadays, makes necessary the development of new antimicrobials against this bacterium.
A common target to all strains are the choline-binding proteins (CBPs). As they are involved in crucial functions for the bacterium, they could be an interesting new approach for the design of new antimicrobials. Previously, the group has separately identified esters of bicyclic amines and choline-binding repeats derivate peptides from CBPs as an agents capable of affect normal growth of the bacterium.
Possible synergies between different combinations of EBAs and CBP-derivate peptides have been studied, characterizing possible effects on the growth, viability and morphology of S. pneumoniae.
