Nostalgia is a complex and predominantly positive emotion linked to the evocation of significant autobiographical memories. Despite growing scientific interest in this phenomenon, there is scarce literature integrating its neural bases together with its psychological functions. This systematic review aims to compile current knowledge on the main brain regions involved in the nostalgic experience and their relationship with its four main psychological functions: autobiographical memory, emotional regulation, self-reference, and reward processing. To this end, seven studies selected using the PRISMA method were analyzed, in which functional neuroimaging techniques were employed. The results indicate that the regions with the greatest activation associated with nostalgia are the mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic system, the medial prefrontal cortex, the lateral frontal cortex, and the cingulate cortex. The psychological function with the greatest neuroanatomical support is emotional regulation, followed by autobiographical memory and reward processing. These findings are consistent with the integrative role of the default mode network, which could explain the simultaneous coactivation of the regions and psychological functions identified in the nostalgic experience. Future studies will be necessary to consolidate this evidence and deepen our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying nostalgia.es_ES
