Eulalia y Germán: Identidad y alteridad en Retahílas de Carmen Martín Gaite

Abstract

Este artículo examina los discursos de la novela Retahílas, de Carmen Martín Gaite, con el objetivo de analizar los procesos de formación de identidad y alteridad entre los dos protagonistas y responde a la pregunta de investigación: ¿Cómo se describen, qué relación tienen y cuál es la finalidad de los discursos de identidad y alteridad en el texto? Para ello, se ha llevado a cabo un análisis de discurso en dos niveles semiótico-comunicativos basado en las teorías de Lotman y Bajtín. Los resultados muestran ciertos elementos semióticos, analizando la novela como un todo, que forman la identidad de los personajes. Los protagonistas de la novela, además, construyen su propia identidad a partir de las semejanzas y diferencias entre ellos y con otros personajes, expresadas en sus discursos a través de sus recuerdos o a consecuencia de la interacción presente. El análisis demuestra que la autora consigue reflejar a través de la novela las tensiones discursivas de identidad y alteridad que se dan en una relación real entre dos personas.

This article examines the discourses in the novel Retahílas, by Carmen Martín Gaite, with the aim of analyzing the processes of construction of identity and otherness between the two protagonists. The study answers the research question: How are the discourses of identity and otherness described, how are they connected and what is their purpose? A discourse analysis has been carried out at two semiotic-communicative levels based on the theories of Lotman and Bakhtin. The results show certain semiotic elements, analysing the novel as a discourse, that construct the identity of the characters. The protagonists of the novel, moreover, build their own identity on the similarities and differences between them and with other characters, which are included in their discourses through their memories or as a result of the present interaction. The analysis shows that the author manages to reflect through the novel the discursive tensions of identity and otherness that occur in a real relationship between two people.
