The province of Alicante, recognised both nationally and internationally for its tourist appeal, has held a prominent place in the media, shaping a public perception that transcends its borders. This research provides a detailed analysis of how national and international media project the image of Alicante, focusing on how these narratives influence key sectors such as tourism, investment, migration, and quality of life. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the study unravels the predominant narratives, identifies recurring themes, and examines the stereotypes associated with the province, assessing how these media representations can impact individual and collective decisions related to tourism and residency.
The analysis is based on a critical review of articles, reports, and references to Alicante published in print media, digital platforms, and other communication outlets over the past five years. A mixed approach is employed, combining qualitative and quantitative analysis, which considers aspects such as the frequency of Alicante's appearance in news stories, the tone used by the media, the topics covered, and the differences in media treatment depending on geographical and cultural contexts.
The research also explores the underlying interests in media coverage, emphasising the influence of sectors such as real estate development, tourism promotion policies, and local investment attraction strategies. In this regard, it analyses how news related to the province, whether positive or negative, affects its appeal as a destination to visit, live, or invest in. Furthermore, the crucial role of international media in shaping a global image of Alicante is highlighted, as this can either enhance or constrain its development in a competitive environment.
