Background and objective: Musculoskeletal disorders are one of the main causes of disability and functional limitation in the world's population. They range from sudden and transient disorders to persistent diseases that cause permanent limitations. There is a certain relationship between musculoskeletal disorders and different psychosocial factors that can affect their development. Within the psychosocial factors, different personality traits such as openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism become relevant. The objective of this study is to know the scientific evidence on the relationship between personality traits and the appearance of musculoskeletal disorders as well as the relation with the evolution of treatments.
Material and methods: A bibliographic search was carried out during the months of June and July 2024 by two researchers in the Pubmed, PEDro and ScienceD irect databases. The articles had to be controlled clinical trials, be related to the discipline of physiotherapy, and mention the topic posed as an objective, without being older than ten years.
Results: Fourteen studies involving 4921 people were found. Thirteen studies established a relationship between musculoskeletal disorders and the influence of personality and emotional traits of the person who suffered from them. One article found no difference between them.
Conclusions: There is an association between musculoskeletal disorders and different personality traits. In turn, psychosocial and emotional factors of the person also influence the development and course of these disorders. These factors must be taken into account in the assessment and intervention from the discipline of physiotherapy because they influence the prognosis of the treatment.
