This present study aims to synthesize existing scientific
evidence on the effectiveness of
interventions designed to improve body image in patients diagnosed with binge eating
disorder. To achieve this, a systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA
protocol, with exhaustive searches conducted in the Pro Quest, PubMed, PsyArticles,
and PsycINFO databases. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, the final
sample consisted of nine studies, with five of them being randomized clinical trials.
Bias assessment of the selected articles was carried out us ing 12 predefined criteria.
The results revealed that cognitive cognitive-behavioral and contextual interventions,
along with exposure techniques, produced significant improvements in aspects of body
image. Some of these variables included body dissatisfaction, concerns, and negative
evaluations associated with the image, psychological flexibility, cognitive fusion,
comparisons, and checking behaviors. However, two of the studies did not reach
statistical significance in some of their results, indicating a lack o f clinical relevance in
certain findings. Despite the positive evidence, it was noted that the number of studies
was limited, with a small sample size.
In conclusion, the psychological interventions presented in the analyzed studies
are effective in impro ving body image and other variables associated with binge eating
disorder. Nevertheless, the need for future experimental research is emphasized, given
the limited sample size and scarcity of available studies, highlighting the importance of
further explor ing effective clinical treatments for eating disorders.
