Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a condition that affects the peripheral nerves,
resulting in reduced sensitivity in the extremities and increasing the risk of injuries. In
the context of diabetes, Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) is a common complication
that can lead to the development of foot ulcers, significantly impacting patients’ quality
of life. This study focuses on plantar pressure analysis as a tool for designing customized
insoles to help prevent injuries in patients with PAD.
In this study, an advanced plantar pressure measurement system was used, incorporating Tekscan insoles and F-scan software, to identify high-pressure areas in the foot,
thus contributing to the effective prevention of ulcers. Measurements were taken from a
group of healthy volunteers, establishing a reference pattern that can be extrapolated to
patients with neuropathy. The results showed that the areas of highest pressure were
predominantly located in the forefoot and heel, with values exceeding the risk thresholds for ulcer formation, reaching maximum pressures of up to 1200 kPa under certain
conditions. Additionally, significant variability in pressure distribution among subjects
was observed, highlighting the need for customization in insole design.
This study suggests that plantar pressure analysis is essential for ulcer prevention in
patients with neuropathy, emphasizing the importance of customization in treatment.
The implementation of plantar pressure measurement technologies can improve the care
and management of peripheral neuropathy, contributing to the reduction of associated
complications.
