Background: Migraine is a neurovascular disorder of the central nervous system that is the second most frequent etiology of primary headache and the main cause of disability worldwide directly related to headache. In recent years, a positive correlation has been observed between this disease and a prior state of dysbiosis as a contributing factor. For this reason, probiotics are being studied as a therapeutic and preventive possibility in this disabling disease. Objective: To verify the degree and presence of this hypothesis the current systematic bibliographic review intends to assess the use of probiotics in the treatment and prevention of Migraine headaches. Methods: The MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library and Web Of Science databases were consulted following a systematic methodology to finally select 9 articles. Conclusion: The preclinical and clinical trials indicate a positive relationship between the pathogenesis of migraine and changes in the intestinal microbiota. Probiotics have shown to provide beneficial effects at the preclinical level and in randomized clinical studies with favorable changes in some biomarkers such as IL-1b, IL6 and TNF-alpha. In order to elaborate a superior grade of evidence based medicine and higher recommendation status, further placebo-controlled and double/triple-blind clinical trials with a uniform methodology are required.
