In our daily work as physiotherapists, muscle strength is something very present, since we are going to have to work on it during our patient's rehabilitation. The aim of the study is to investigate the benefits of each of the forms of work for this purpose, and to compare whether it is better to carry out eccentric work or concentric work for the recovery of muscle strength. After carrying out a bibliographic search in four databases (PubMed, Scopus, PEDro and Cochrane), thirteen clinical trials were selected. The results obtained on concentric exercise were that it improves muscle strength and is useful for increasing muscle power, an important factor in young athletes but not so much in older people. About eccentric exercise, it is important for rehabilitation, increasing muscle strength and joint stability, with less oxygen expenditure and perceived effort. It is also useful in healthy people allowing us to perform exercises carrying more weight than in concentric exercise. In mixed training (using both types of contraction) we obtain the best results in terms of muscle strength recovery, being able to vary contraction speeds and accentuating, for example, the eccentric phase load, which shows even better results in terms of strength gains in young healthy patients. The most effective training method is therefore a mixed training, benefiting from both types of contraction and being able to implement isometric exercise prior to exercise to increase muscle performance.
