Ratched is a series set in 1947 created and directed by Ryan Murphy in 2020. The direction of photography in the hands of Simon Dennis, Nelson Cragg and Blake Mclure stands out for the use of color to create environments, communicate emotions and mental states of the characters, giving the work a characteristic psychological dimension.
In this research, using the knowledge about color and photography learned during the degree, and through an analysis of the resources of the direction of photography in relation to the moment of the plot, we define the use of color in the series around the study developed by Eva Heller (Heller, 2004). Aspects such as color saturation and tone will be analyzed, but also its arrangement in the shot, the association with the moment and the characters, among other aspects, in order to examine its role in the plot.
