Chronic Achilles tendinopathy is a common and debilitating condition that increasingly affects more people, negatively impacting their quality of life. In the search for effective treatments for this chronic injury, this study aims to evaluate whether extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is an effective conservative treatment that can improve and reverse the condition, given its growing popularity today.
Nine articles were selected, focusing on the study subject with ESWT as the main treatment, assessing its effectiveness and generating evidence for its use. The most significant expression found in the literature review was "significantly better," indicating promising results in terms of pain reduction, improved functionality, and patient satisfaction compared to their pre-treatment condition.
Other important parameters to determine the treatment's effectiveness included evaluating short- and long-term results, the use of anesthetics, imaging techniques to check for neovascularization, types of tendinopathies and their response to treatment, as well as the protocols used in each study and the different types of shock waves.
In conclusion, ESWT has shown scientific evidence as an effective conservative and regenerative treatment for chronic Achilles tendinopathy. However, further research is needed to obtain more concrete and objective results that can standardize and optimize its clinical application.
