Introduction: mental health is understood by the World Health Organization as a state of mental well- being that enables people to cope with life's stressful moments, develop all their abilities, learn and work properly and integrate into their environment. Problems related to mental health that people suffer from can affect all areas of life, as well as the loss of autonomy in carrying out activities of daily living. Because of this, it is necessary to improve the evaluation process by occupational therapy professionals in mental health and therefore, this study aims to cross-culturally adapt the original Argentine version of the Assessment of Activities of Daily Living and Instrumental Activities Scale (VAVDI) to the Spanish context.
Methodology: the VAVDI assesses the degree of third-party support a person needs to perform an activity safely. Cross-cultural adaptation was performed using international guidelines that included translation, back-translation and pilot study. A committee of experts reviewed the different phases of the process and arrived at the final version. The tool was tested on a sample of 20 participants from two Mental Health centers in the province of Alicante, the Association for the Defense and Integration of the Mentally Ill (ADIEM Foundation) and the Center for Rehabilitation and Social Integration (CRIS) in Elda.
Results: the committee of experts decided to make modifications in order to achieve optimal understanding, semantic, linguistic and conceptual equivalence, as well as a cultural adaptation of the content of the assessment for use in the Spanish population.
Conclusion: a version of the VAVDI adapted cross-culturally to the Spanish context is available for use by occupational therapy professionals. Before promoting its use, it is necessary to evaluate its psychometric properties.
