Formative evaluation encompasses any assessment that is carried out continuously throughout the learning process, providing constant and personalized feedback to monitor the progress of students. Currently, it is being given a recognized importance in education, however, its application in health and social professional training is still limited, and poses many challenges to achieve a regulation and improvement of the teaching-learning process, where the preparation of professionals is crucial for the quality in this process and the existing literature does not delve into its development. The objective was to develop a proposal for the practical application of formative assessment through the design of a digital portfolio in order to show its usefulness to regulate and improve the processes of acquisition of competencies in students of health care specialty, so it was necessary to conduct this study . An exhaustive bibliographic search was carried out in databases, obtaining information on the current state of the art on formative evaluation. The search showed a growing concern to apply formative assessment in all fields, although without many allusions to the specialty of social and health care. Consequently, based on the results obtained, an innovative proposal for the application of formative assessment in the social and health care context is presented, through the design of a digital portfolio, as it has been shown in the literature as a means that promotes the improvement of competency learning.
