Chronic or severe mental illness is understood to be one with symptoms of functional
psychosis that causes persistent disabilities and that may require admission to residential
centers. Being the main cause of years lost due to disability, early and complete interventions
are needed, which include, in addition to pharmacological and psychological treatment,
evidence-based interventions related to lifestyle. An intervention plan is proposed from
Occupational Therapy for institutionalized people with severe mental illness, with the specific
objectives of: recovering motor, cognitive and social skills, as well as their participation in
meaningful activities, improving their awareness and management of the disease and its
negative symptoms and develop healthy lifestyle habits. It will last a total of 3 months, with
groups of between 5 and 10 people and three weekly sessions. A total of 36 sessions will be
based on the human occupation model, intervening in areas such as: disease management,
training in social, cognitive and self-care skills, autonomy, leisure, communication and
pre-work. An evaluation will be carried out both at the beginning and at the end with the
objective of empirically assessing the process, through tests such as: Non-Awareness of
Mental Disorder Assessment Scale (SUMD), Functional Independence Measure (FIM), Daily
Living Skills Profile (LSP), Cognitive Mini-Exam (MEC), Leisure and Free Time Assessment
Scale (EVOLT) and Social Skills Questionnaire (CHASO).
