Handball is a dynamic team sport where two teams of seven players aim to score goals in the opponent's net. This contact sport involves intense actions like sprints, changes of direction, and jumps. New trends have increased the game's pace and intensity, requiring updated training methods.
The Small-Sided Game (SSG) is an emerging methodology that simulates match movement patterns in reduced areas, integrating technical and tactical aspects with high intensity. Studies have shown that SSG is more effective than traditional training, improving jump power and agility.
This study compares the effect of SSG and traditional warm-up on young handball players. Forty-six players in the youth, cadet, and junior categories participated, divided into experimental and control groups. After eight training sessions over four weeks, vertical jump (Counter Movement Jump), linear sprint with change of direction (5-0-5 test), and agility (Handball Agility Specific Test) skills were measured.
Preliminary results suggest that SSG significantly improves jump power, speed with direction change, and agility compared to traditional warm-up. This approach could optimize performance and provide more effective preparation.
