Antimicrobial stewardship programs are crucial to face the global issue of antibiotic resistance, especially those aimed at primary care due to it is the first contact between healthcare personnel and patients, both for the correct antibiotic prescription and for receiving suitable information about their use. This paper examines the existing literature on these programs and focuses on intervention strategies, clinical outcomes, and the perception of different healthcare professionals. The importance of proper education and training of medical teams is also highlighted, as well as the use of support tools such as prescription guidelines and automated feedback. The aim of the study is to understand the variety of antimicrobial optimization programs that can be employed in primary health care to reduce the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance. For this purpose, a literature review was conducted on eleven scientific articles extracted from various databases addressing the topic as the main focus. These articles revealed the importance of including several programs and decision support tools related to antibiotic prescription and use in primary care, with significant results in reducing the rate of prescribed antibiotics ad its consumption.
