Introduction: Urinary incontinence is a condition characterized by the involuntary loss of urine, posing
a hygienic and social problem. The aim of this review is to determine the effectiveness of
physiotherapeutic treatment for urinary incontinence, as well as to analyze the risk factors and
prevalence associated with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in women weightlifters.
Materials and Methods: A literature review of scientific articles was conducted by consulting the
databases Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science, published from 2016 to the present. The PEDro and
STROBE scales were used to assess the methodological quality of the selected articles.
Results: The initial search yielded 197 articles, applying filters based on population, study type, and
publication date. Abstracts were reviewed, and when necessary, full articles were examined, ultimately
including 22 articles with relevant information for this review.
Conclusions: Based on the review of the scientific literature, it can be concluded that
physiotherapeutic treatment, particularly the EMSP method, is effective for women with stress urinary
incontinence (SUI) in strength sports. SUI negatively impacts women's lives, reducing performance
and quality of life. Risk factors such as age, body mass index, and vaginal delivery increase the
likelihood of developing SUI. The prevalence of SUI in female athletes is significant, particularly in
sports like Crossfit. Although there is controversy, lack of specific training and improper technique can
weaken the pelvic floor, increasing the risk of SUI.
