Introduction: Fibromyalgia is a complex systemic disorder that affects the global population, mainly women. The most common symptoms are joint stiffness, chronic musculoskeletal pain and systemic symptoms including cognitive dysfunction, sleep disorders, anxiety, fatigue and depressive episodes. Self-management programs are a tool used in the global treatment of fibromyalgia.
Objectives: To analyze the available scientific evidence on the effects of self-management programs on quality of life and pain in patients with fibromyalgia. To describe the tools used to measure variables. To examine self-management protocols for fibromyalgia. To analyze the results obtained.
Material and method: The PICOS strategy was followed, and the search was carried out through the scientific platforms Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Virtual Health Library, Web os Science and Science Direct. Different keywords were used through thesaurus and free terms. This review only includes randomized controlled trials.
Results: 10 articles were included in the study, which showed disparate results. However, in general, self-management programs were seen to produce improvements in fibromyalgia.
Conclusions: Self-management programs have shown heterogeneous results regarding pain and quality of life. An effective type of protocol has not been found for patients with fibromyalgia. Further research is needed to improve treatment adherence and reach conclusive results.
