Introduction: Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease caused by uncontrolled cell growth in any of the components of the breast, with a much higher incidence in women. Treatment for patients suffering from this disease includes pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, including therapeutic exercise in the last ones.
Objective: To review the scientific evidence about the different therapeutic exercise programs carried out in patients with breast cancer simultaneously to chemotherapy treatment to mitigate its side effects, as well as to detect outcome measures and instruments used for it.
Material and methods: The databases PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Web of Science were searched, including clinical trials and randomized controlled trials. The reviewed articles were evaluated using the PEDro scale.
Results: 20 articles that met the inclusion criteria were included. The exercise modalities used were mainly aerobic exercise and resistance exercise, also including work on balance, flexibility and muscular relaxation. The most frequent measurement variables were cancer-related fatigue (CRF) and quality of life (QoL).
Conclusion: Therapeutic exercise appears to improve cardiorespiratory and exercise capacities, symptom burden, quality of sleep and life, fatigue and strength; prevents body weight gain and hemodynamic changes and maintains cognitive functioning.
