Introduction: Nowadays, chronic pain is an international health issue, affecting 30,3% of people worldwide. Besides health issue, it it becomes a social and economical matter, due to its complexity and significative impact in quality peoples’life. The increasing use of digital tools within healthcare system makes virtual reality into a promising strategy for chronic pain patients. Objectives: Reviwing existing cientific bibliography in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment using virtual reality in the approach of chronic pain treatment. Methodology: Bibliography search has been carried out with documents from 2018 located in Pubmed, PEDro and Web of Science database in order to determinate the effectiveness of virtual reality as a posible therapeutic method in chronic pain patients. Results: Seventheen studies were selected. Among them, pain intensity has been analised in fourteen through Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) or Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), bringing significative better results for virtual reality. Moreover, it has been identify a clear adherence to treatment in them. Conclusions: Evidence about the efficiency of virtual reality as a distraction strategy to reduce intensity of pain exists at short therm. Its motivational component stands out as main advantage. Possible secundary effects and its clinical accessibility are pointed out as main inconvenients. More homogenic investigations are suggested in order to conclude its better clinical aplication in a reliable way.
