Introduction: Temporomandibular Joint disorders (TMD) are a common orofacial disease that
affects all age groups. The treatment of TMD in most cases is multidisciplinary, the treatment is
complicated and requires specific knowledge and exercises to strengthen some muscle groups
and weaken others, occlusal splints, massages and pharmacotherapy.
Objectives: to determine the effectiveness of different physiotherapy treatments and the
possibility of preventing symptoms in patients with TMD.
Methodology: A search was carried out in the PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane and PeDro
databases, which determined the effectiveness of various physiotherapy treatments and the way
to prevent symptoms in patients with TMD.
Results: following the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the articles that were reviewed were a
total of 18 articles. The main outcome measure analyzed was pain and mouth opening, but some
articles also included anxiety levels, quality of life and joint noises.
Conclusions: there is moderate-high evidence of the efficacy of the different physiotherapy
treatments in TMD and there is a consensus that a combination therapy has more benefits in
patients with TMD. For prevention, we talk above all about patient education on the anatomy
and pathology of TMJ, however, a greater number of studies on prevention in physiotherapy in
patients with TMD symptoms are needed
