Abstract:
Pa... Ver más
Objective: To determine the effectiveness of interferential current therapy (ICF) in the reduction of
chronic low back pain (CLBP).
Material and methods: An electronic search was carried out in MEDILINE (PubMed) and EMBASE
databases from December 18, 2022 to March 17, 2023. PEDro was used to assess methodological quality
and Cochrane was used to assess risk of bias. Inclusion criteria were specified using the PICO-S
question. Studies without a control group, not written in English or Spanish, not published in full text,
without specifying parameters, or those in which ICF was mixed with other interventions were excluded.
Results: Seven RCTs (n=418) were selected for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Pain (NPRS, VAS
and MPQ), disability, and mechanical pain threshold with algometer were analyzed. Pain decreased
significantly after one session when measured with the NPRS (2.43; 95%CI(1.67,3.20)), as well as with
the MPQ (2.52; 95%CI(1.53,3.51)), but not with the VAS (2.08; 95%CI(-0.55,4.70)), even after 10-20
sessions.
Discussion: This review found significant differences for pain reduction in people with CLBP without
the application of other treatment. Previous studies found no significant difference in pain reduction
when ICF was applied as the only treatment. The parameters, form and site of application and sessions
were heterogeneous. The application of ICF is suggested for the reduction of CLBP.
