Journalism, from its origins in the 19th century to the present day, has been threatened by barriers and obstacles. These obstacles have evolved throughout history depending on the historical and social moment of the country. Freedom of expression is enshrined as a fundamental right in the Spanish Constitution and covers the freedoms of opinion, information and the press. The right to information and freedom of expression is recognised in the 1981 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and is a sine qua non condition for acquiring knowledge, creating a critical personal vision, and for each individual in a society to make decisions based on their own reality. Information on the Western Sahara conflict in Spain is practically non-existent and is conditioned by the political situation in Spain and the economic interests of the different political parties. It is a conflict that is silenced by the Spanish general media and international politics, as well as by the international media. The media silence is a denial of freedom for the Sahrawi people, an act of forgetfulness and an abandonment of the people who for 18 years were Spain's 53rd province.
