The vertical video format has changed the way in which audiovisual content is created and consumed. This academic work serves to understand how the vertical video format has broken into, how are the contents created for it on social networks and when this format is used outside its natural reproduction medium, the mobile phone. For this, the appearance of this format has been widely contextualized in a historical way, from social networks like Vine to the current and popular TikTok. The tools, strategies and techniques used in the professional creation of this type of video are also analyzed. On the other hand, semiotics is used as a science to understand the meaning that this video format has for society, when it is used, in what media and what the mere use of this format within audiovisual content implies. For this, its use in the audiovisual sphere is defined, outside of the classic analysis of Fernand Saussure's linguistic signs of Course in General Linguistics, to focus on visual semiotics, proposing a renewal of this science in the current communicative context. For a better understanding, different cases of use of vertical videos in different audiovisual fields are analyzed in native content created specifically to be consumed in the popular short-duration vertical video format, appearance in news programs, video clips, live concerts or documentaries.
