Wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD) is the main cause of central vision loss in developed countries. It is a chronic disease that is characterized by being really disabling for the patient, and also has the aggravating factor that there is no cure. There are treatments that help to delay the progression of the disease, but they do not reverse the situation. These treatments are based on the use of anti-VEGF drugs to reduce the severity of the choroidal neovascular lesions. The route of administration of these treatments is monthly or bimonthly intravitreal injection, which is an aspect that really hinders patients' adherence to treatment, as it is a very invasive route of administration. Moreover, this route of administration requires the patient to go to specialists for its application. The aim of this review is to highlight the existence of other drug delivery systems that make it possible to reduce the frequency of intravitreal injections and even the use of other routes of administration, through different therapeutic strategies. The delivery systems studied in this review are nanoparticles.
