IntroducWon: based on what has been published so far on the BodyMetrix™ BX2000 A-mode
ultrasound system as a method of determining body fat, valid results have been found in adults,
with a good correlaWon with methods such as DEXA, plethysmography or hydrostaWc weighing.
Although with a certain tendency towards underesWmaWon and, in some studies, with worse
results in the female sex. The jusWficaWon for this work is to assess the usefulness of the method in the pediatric populaWon, using bioimpedance as the reference method and also to make a
comparison with BMI and tricipital skinfold, as well as to assess reliability by gender.
Material and methods: this is a cross-secWonal descripWve observaWonal study, conducted
between the months of September and November 2022 with 29 pediatric paWents between 8
and 17 years of age. The variables collected were: age, gender, biotype, height, weight, BMI,
triceps caliper, bodymetrix measurements in triceps and calf and body fat percentage using
bodymetrix and bioimpedance. A descripWve analysis of the sample was carried out in qualitaWve
and quanWtaWve variables. Subsequently, Student's and Levene's T tests were applied to look for
differences by gender. Finally, the correlaWon coefficient between the variables and their
significance with a value < 0.05 was assessed.
Results: Pearson's correlaWon raWo demonstrated a significant (p<0.001) and very strong (0.856)
associaWon between bioimpedance and bodymetrix measurement of body fat. This associaWon
was also strong (0.842) and significant with body mass index, and with bodymetrix in calf muscles
(0.789) and of less intensity, but also important, with bodymetrix in triceps, weight and caliper
in triceps.
Conclusions: bodymetrix seems to be a reliable method compared to bioimpedance for
measuring the percentage of total body fat in children, demonstraWng a strong and significant
correlaWon between both measurement systems. There is also evidence of a great correlaWon of
both the bodymetrix system and bioimpedance with BMI, triceps skinfold, and weight. The
existence of gender differences could not be established.
