Abstract:
Introduction. Cataracts are the main cause of visual impairment in the world, as well as the first cause of blindness in low-middle income countries. Given the lack of healthcare resources in these countries, cooperative initiatives account for a sizable portion of ophthalmological care. Methodology. The goal of this retrospective descriptive study is to describe the demographic traits of those affected, as well as their anatomical and functional ophthalmological parameters, using data from patients undergoing cataract surgery in campaigns run by the NGO Visió Sense Fronteres in Kenya between 2015 and 2021. Results. A total of 1681 cataract operated eyes belonging to 1494 patients were examined. The prevalence of cataract was proportional to age. In contrast, the gender distribution of the care given was quite similar (51.53% women). The ethnic composition of the group reflects the great ethnographic variability of the environment. Estimated visual acuity three months after the interventions was significantly higher than that measured at the preoperative visit (0.57 ± 0.32 vs 0.06 ± 0.1 respectively; Mann-Whitney, p<0.001). The rupture of the posterior lens capsule was the most frequent intraoperative complication (2.85%). Conclusions. The scarcity of resources for the adequate promotion of ocular health suggests that the realization of assistance and teaching programs is needed in low-middle income countries
